Message From the Principal
Dear parents/carers,
On Tuesday we celebrated our Book Week Parade as part of Book Week Celebrations for 2024. Our students and staff dressed up to celebrate this day. There were Harry Potter characters galore, witches, wizards, minions, princesses, pirates, dinosaurs and many more wonderful characters. Book week is a time that reminds us of the importance of reading and the beauty of reading books. My favorite author growing up was Roald Dahl. Roald Dahl wrote amazing books such as Matilda, James and the Giant Peach, The BFG and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Roald Dahl famously said
“I have a passion for teaching kids to become readers, to become comfortable with a book, not daunted. Books shouldn’t be daunting, they should be funny, exciting and wonderful; and learning to be a reader gives a terrific advantage.”
I share this passion that he ignited in me. I and, in fact, we as a school are passionate about giving your children the skills they need to read and understand in order to fully participate in this wonderful world of books so that they can share in this wonderful advantage that Roald Dahl describes.
As parents there is so much you can do as well. Read with your children. Share the books you loved when you were young or engage with more modern books from your children’s time. Talk about what has happened so far in the books and make predictions about what will happen next.
I think former president of the USA Barack Obama summarised everything about reading when he said. "Reading is important. If you know how to read, then the whole world opens up to you."
God Bless

Here at Resurrection, we are so lucky during Term Three to have some wonderful community events! From the Bullying No Way picnic last week to Book Week Parade this week and Father’s Day celebrations next Friday. A huge thank you everyone from our community - parents, students and staff for participating in these events allowing us to gather as a community.
Fathers Gift Stall
A reminder that our Father’s Day stall will be held next Tuesday 27th August with all gifts being sold for $5.00. Please note that there are 6 different items for students to choose from. Parents will need to pre-purchase items sold at the Father’s Day stall using the following link https://resurrection-catholic-primary-school.square.site/ The site will close at 4.00pm on Monday afternoon. Your child will then receive a token at school which they will take to the stall to exchange for a gift. To begin with each child will only be able to purchase ONE item to ensure that all families get the opportunity to buy a gift from the stall. If there are any remaining gifts available for purchase the square site will be reopened with the remaining number of gifts available for anyone to purchase in the courtyard on Wednesday 28th and Thursday 29th August afternoon from 3.00 - 3.30pm. We are calling out for any helpers who hold Working with Children Checks (WWCC) who are available to assist at the Father’s Day stall on Tuesday 27th August from 8.30 until around 1.30pm. Please contact the office via email if you are able to assist at office@rskingspark.catholic.edu.au
Father’s Day Celebrations
On Friday August 30th, we are taking the opportunity to celebrate our dads and those who are father
figures in our lives to share breakfast, some fun and games and an activity with your child/ren. Breakfast is
a bacon and egg roll that will be served from 7.30am and conclude at 8.30am. There will be plenty of
games to play in the courtyard and a craft activity to complete with your child. Fr Gerard will then be
giving our special guests a blessing in the courtyard at

Book Week: Reading is Magic!
What an amazing week we had full of celebrations throughout the week of Book Week. We celebrated with some fantastic special competitions and events but the highlight was definitely the Book Week Parade on Tuesday morning held in the costume. As students entered the courtyard in the morning there was a certain magic in the air as we were welcomed by the Harry Potter theme music and many magical characters. Well done to all of our wonderful community who got involved and supported each other as each grade paraded around the courtyard.
A big thank you to our staff who always get involved and create such a fun and inspirational experience when taking part in events such as these. We are so lucky to have such passionate staff who love to get involved in such special events. Thank you to Mr Dalton for his very impressive MC skills, Miss Banks for your work with the set up and parade music, Miss Salloum for overseeing the organisation of our Spelling Bee and our many staff who supported these events and/or judged our writing, illustration and colouring competitions.
MACSIS Survey
Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools – School Improvement Surveys (MACSSIS): Monday 2 September – Friday 20 September 2024. Throughout each year, we pause to listen to our students, families and staff to gauge how our learning community is traveling. This feedback is invaluable to our progress as effective school communities and is backed by evidence-based research and best practices.
A significant and formal way in which we engage and gather data is through MACSSIS, the Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools – School Improvement Surveys. MACSSIS is a set of surveys that have been built specifically for Catholic schools in Melbourne by the Learning Services team at MACS, in partnership with researchers at Learning First and in wide consultation with principals in our schools.
In 2024, students, families and staff are invited to participate in MACSSIS via our secure and purpose-built online platform. The online platform is where our school leaders will access the summary reports that visualise the results of the student, family and staff surveys.
The MACSSIS survey platform is operated by an independent supplier, ORIMA Research Pty Ltd. The platform meets with the high security and privacy standards for handling student and school data. Participating schools are in the process of updating their privacy policy to ensure school communities are fully informed and protected.
Students at our school will be provided with supervised sessions, where teachers are on hand to help and answer any questions. Families and staff can complete the survey anytime over the three-week window via an emailed link and password. Feedback has indicated that previous surveys were completed across a range of mobile devices and different web browsers. Our community’s opinions are critical to understanding how our school is performing – MACSSIS is a key data source for guiding the ongoing work to improve our school.
Throughout the next couple of weeks, you may receive a phone call and a special code if you have been randomly selected to participate in the MACSIS survey here at Resurrection. All participation is invited, welcomed and 100 per cent voluntary. The surveys are not a test; they are an inclusive way to support the work we are already doing to improve our school. Everyone has the right to refuse to participate, or withdraw from the survey at any point before, during or after completion of the survey.
Please notify the office if your child does not wish to participate. If you would like more information, please contact the school.
God Bless,
Shannon Betham

SUNDAY GOSPEL
This Sunday’s reading is from the Holy Gospel according to John (6: 60-69)
Lord, whom shall we go to? You have the words of everlasting life.
Jesus said to the crowd:
After hearing his doctrine many of the followers of Jesus said, ‘This is intolerable language. How could anyone accept it?’ Jesus was aware that his followers were complaining about it and said, ‘Does this upset you? What if you should see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before?
‘It is the spirit that gives life,
the flesh has nothing to offer.
The words I have spoken to you are spirit
and they are life.
‘But there are some of you who do not believe.’ For Jesus knew from the outset those who did not believe, and who it was that would betray him. He went on, ‘This is why I told you that no one could come to me unless the Father allows him.’ After this, many of his disciples left him and stopped going with him.
Then Jesus said to the Twelve, ‘What about you, do you want to go away too?’ Simon Peter answered, ‘Lord, who shall we go to? You have the message of eternal life, and we believe; we know that you are the Holy One of God.’
Gospel Reflection
For the last few weeks, we have heard a number of readings from chapter 6 of the Gospel of John focusing on the teaching of Jesus that he is the Bread of Life, come down from heaven. This reading is the last in the sequence and shows the reaction to Jesus’ teaching. What Jesus has been saying in this discourse is incredibly confronting to his Jewish audience. Jesus asserts that he has come down from heaven – from the Father – and that through knowing him one can know the Father. Jews were the first people to have a concept of one God. This belief did not allow for any spouse or child of God, nor any personal manifestation. They struggled with what Jesus was saying because his claim to have come down from heaven could be seen as blasphemous. No wonder many of them walked away from Jesus and wanted nothing more to do with him!
Jesus gives an interesting response to them. He tells them that it is the spirit that is important, not his human flesh, and that the spirit is what he has been sharing with them through his words and actions. He is trying to say to these faithful Jews, don’t be hung up about the fact that I’m here in person, listen to my message as you’ve never heard it before. It is an interesting thought for our modern audience as well. How often do we fail to hear the message of Jesus because we are dismissive of the way in which it comes to us; the messenger; or the circumstances in which we hear it? The message is all the more confronting when it comes from an unlikely (or even un-likable) source. The message of Jesus is to be found in our everyday encounters with everyday people.
Historical Context – Christians and Jews
The first followers of Jesus and those who became followers in the years after the death of Jesus were faithful Jews. They saw the teachings of Jesus as a way of being a better Jew. They didn’t think that they were beginning a new religion; just a new way of interpreting their faith. However, as the years passed and the followers of Jesus began to clarify their understandings and beliefs, it started to become obvious that their belief in Jesus as the Son of God was distancing them from their Jewish brothers and sisters. Gradually the term, Christian, came into use and their differences from Judaism became more apparent.
Gospel Focus - Peter’s Faith
Having laid out a fairly difficult teaching to the crowd, Jesus is faced with the fact that many of those who were following him couldn’t cope with what he was saying and they walked away from him. Jesus turns on the Twelve and demands of them, ‘What about you, do you want to go away too?’ One can almost hear the frustration and weariness in his voice. Peter’s response must have been a great relief to Jesus. Peter declares that Jesus has the message of eternal life and is the Holy One of God. He still hasn’t quite got the full picture but it’s something Jesus can continue to work with!
Living the Gospel – Message and Medium
We live in a world that is saturated by advertising and marketers trying to persuade us to think certain things, want certain things and even act in certain ways. At times the message and the medium of the message blur and it’s not always clear where one stops and the other begins. For Christian people the medium – the person – IS the message (or at least should be!). We are called to live what we believe. That can be tough at times, especially in our modern world, but the challenge comes from the example Jesus gave.
Expression Of Interest In A Parish Initiative
What is it?
Our Parish is looking to begin a wonderful initiative for our community.
The idea is for people to come together on a regular basis to share a quality meal as a way to strengthen the connections within our community.
We invite you to be part of this team!
If you are interested and would like to know more in this please contact Leon De Souza via email dsouza.leon@gmail.com
STEM MAD - Poster competition
Last term, we had several students enter the inter schools STEM MAD poster competition. Out of all of the schools in the Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS), Keiara (5A) poster was judged the PRIMARY SCHOOL WINNER.
Keiara’s poster has been scanned and will be displayed at the STEM MAD Showcase and may also be used in marketing materials and media.
Well done Keiara!

Good News Story
As the proud parents of Aeyana Catayong, grade 3B, we wanted to share some good news.
Last Sunday 18/8/24, Aeyana competed in the Girls (9yrs) -27kg division of the 2024 National Australian Jiu-jitsu Championships held at Melbourne Sports & Aquatic Centre with competitors from around Australia and the world.
Aeyana has been working hard preparing and training for the competition with her brother Aurelius, who is one of her coaches, and she was blessed with an amazing day as all her competitors were friendly and she made it to the finals, achieving her first ever gold medal. This gold medal meant alot because she learnt the value of resilience; in her previous competitions, she achieved 4th place then bronze, and now gold.
Aeyana was so happy because her friends and family were there to cheer for her & celebrate with her.
We love to share the different outside of school events our students are part of.
If you have something to share, please email office@rskingspark.catholic.edu.au
