Term 3 Week 9 of 10

Friday, 13th September 2024

Message From the Principal

Dear Parents/Carers,

Who would believe that we find ourselves in September and subsequently approaching the final week of Term 3? Below I have written about just a few of the special events that have occurred this week and are happening next week. How lucky we are to have such wonderful learning opportunities to provide for our students!

Confirmation

Last Saturday, I had the pleasure of attending the first two of our Parish and School Confirmation Masses. Thank you to Bishop Martin Ashe, along with Fr Gerard, who celebrated the final Sacrament of Initiation with our School and Parish confirmation candidates, their sponsors and family members.

Our Confirmation candidates affirmed their Baptismal promises and were sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit. Bishop Martin spoke to the newly confirmed about how they have now been given the opportunity to use the gifts of Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge, Piety and Fear of the Lord to be the face of Christ to all they encounter.

Bishop Martin also reminded the newly confirmed students that God had a purpose for each one of them and that they are all different with different temperaments, characteristics, talents and gifts and that God loves them because of their uniqueness. He shared that they are now called to “take this gift given via Confirmation and to make a difference in the world with it.” Bishop Martin affirmed the great work that is being done at Resurrection Parish through Project Ubuntu and the sponsorship of students in Uganda to attend school. He said the “Holy Spirit is certainly alive here in the parish of Resurrection through the work of the Uganda project. Wherever there is goodness and hope there is the Holy Spirit, and we give thanks to God for the work being done here at Resurrection.”

I ask you to pray for these students and their families as they continue their faith journey. Thank you to Mrs Aclan our school Religious Education Leader as well as Mrs Rachael Bonavia and Mrs Melanie Apap from the Resurrection Parish for their wonderful preparation of all the confirmation candidates. Thank you to the Grade Six teachers as well as the staff who were also in attendance for continuing to support our students on their faith journey.

P-2 Tabloid Sports

On Monday we were finally able to hold our Prep to Year 2 Tabloid Sports. My sincere thanks to Mrs Veronica Kulkewycz for her planning and organisation of the event as well as to Ms Jen Barresi and Mr Matt Dalton for their coordination and running of the tabloid sports. Our student leaders also did a marvelous job of running each of the stations - I feel like we may have some future primary school teachers in the making!

I think that the biggest congratulations needs to go to our Grade Prep to Grade 2 students for showing our PBL values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience. It was so wonderful to see the smiles on the students' faces as they completed each activity showing such wonderful team spirit. Please read in the newsletter for more photos of this wonderful event!

Grade 4 Camp

Earlier this week our Grade 4 students attended Camp Wyuna in Queenscliff where they got the opportunity to learn more about the different sea life that live in Port Phillip Bay.  Camp is always such a wonderful learning opportunity for our students to show their independence and sense of resilience as they face new and exciting learning outside of the classroom.

Thank you to Enza La Rosa, Natalie Donevska, Georgia Tankey, Zina Costa, Claudette Petruccelli, Helen Frigo, Joss Coaley and Veronica Kulkewycz who took time away from their loved ones to attend the Grade 4 camp.

Last day of Term 3 & Footy Colours Day

Just a reminder that next Friday is the last day of school! We will be celebrating all the learning opportunities, friendships and memories that Term 3 has given us with Mass at 9.00am. All are welcome to attend. We will also be having our annual sports colours dress up day where students may dress up in their favorite sporting team colours.

Please note that it is a normal 3.15pm finish next Friday.

God Bless,

MACSIS Survey

A reminder that the Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools – School Improvement Surveys (MACSSIS) will be happening Monday 2 September – Friday 20 September 2024. Throughout each year, we pause to listen to our students, families and staff to gauge how our learning community is traveling. This feedback is invaluable to our progress as effective school communities and is backed by evidence-based research and best practices.

If you have randomly been selected, received a call and an email with a unique code that your feedback is greatly appreciated and that you have until Friday 20th September to complete the survey!

STEM MAD SHOWCASE

On Tuesday the 10th September we were lucky enough to have several students represent our school at the STEM MAD showcase. The STEM MAD Showcase is designed to acknowledge and promote STEM learning initiatives that address real-world problems and demonstrate how students in Catholic schools can take action that matters. Jeremiah, Daniel, Isabel and Kaida were inspired by Resurrection Parish’s environmental ministry group Kateri to create the Bin Boozle! A robotic bin aimed to Make A Difference (MAD) to others and the environment. Words cannot adequately express how incredibly proud I am of the students. Speaking publicly in front of judges, teachers and students is no easy task, but they did an AMAZING job!

We also had students participate in the STEM MAD Aviation competition. Nathan and Jalen were awarded first place for the fastest plane over 5 laps! Keiara and Madison also received second place for designing the most innovative/creative design.

STEM MAD - POSTER COMPETITION

Last term, we announced that Keiara had been awarded the STEM MAD PRIMARY SCHOOL WINNER. It was incredibly exciting to see Keiara’s work proudly on display around the STEM MAD showcase. Congratulations on being a published artist!

As a school community we are very proud of all the students' efforts, along with a big thank you to Paola Arredondo for helping us on the day.

Art show- ‘Community’ theme Logo Winner

The school has been buzzing with excitement and anticipation as to who’s artwork will help advertise our upcoming art show. The choice was so difficult as we had such a large amount of high-quality entries. Firstly, a big thank you to each and every one of you who took the time to create and submit your masterpieces! Eventually it was narrowed down to five logos who not only matched the success criteria but also added their own flare to their design. After that the process was to get the Art Show Committee to vote on their favorite design which leads us to the winner…

Emmeline in 5B

A massive congratulations to Emme, her design was unique, colourful and encapsulates everything we love about art!

Here is what Emme had to say about her design, “I designed [this] logo [by having the world community as the focus]. I drew people with common interests and shared interest in the letters. Community to me is a group of people with a shared connection such as a common location, interests, schooling, neighbourhood, parish and ethnicity.”

We would also like to give an honorable mention to our top four runner ups for their entries, unfortunately you didn’t make it this year, but we look forward to seeing what you produce for our next art show!

SUNDAY GOSPEL

This Sunday’s reading is from the Holy Gospel according to Mark (8:27-35)

You are the Christ … the Son of Man was destined to suffer much.

Jesus and his disciples left for the villages round Caesarea Philippi. On the way he put this question to his disciples, ‘Who do people say I am?’ And they told him. ‘John the Baptist,’ they said, ‘others Elijah; others again, one of the prophets.’ ‘But you,’ he asked, ‘who do you say I am?’ Peter spoke up and said to him, ‘You are the Christ.’ And he gave them strict orders not to tell anyone about him.

And he began to teach them that the Son of Man was destined to suffer grievously, to be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and to be put to death, and after three days to rise again; and he said all this quite openly. Then, taking him aside, Peter started to remonstrate with him. But, turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said to him, ‘Get behind me, Satan! Because the way you think is not God’s way but man’s.’

He called the people and his disciples to him and said, ‘If anyone wants to be a follower of mine, let him renounce himself and take up his cross and follow me. For anyone who wants to save his life will lose it; but anyone who loses his life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it.’

Gospel Reflection

‘But you, who do you say I am?’ This would have to be one of the most powerful questions of the gospels. It echoes down the centuries and is just as relevant today as it ever was. ‘Who do you say I am?’ Our answer to that question is perhaps the most revealing statement of our faith. Our answer no doubt changes over time as we grow in understanding and as we experience the ups and downs of life, but nonetheless, just like Peter in the gospel passage, our answer remains a clear statement of our faith. ‘Who do you say I am?’ Just a good guy who lived 2,000 years ago? A role model? A friend? God made flesh? The Word come down from heaven? Nobody? Everybody? Our saviour? An inspired man of God? The Messiah?

Perhaps you’ve never tried to actually answer the question yourself. It is a confronting question, ‘Who do you say I am?’ It’s confronting because, as Christian people, we believe that our actions are a reflection of our beliefs and values. It’s confronting because whatever we say in answer to that question has implications for the way we live. ‘Who do you say I am?’ You see, the question is in the present tense, not the past. It doesn’t ask ‘Who do you say I was?’; it asks, ‘Who do you say I AM?’ The very question asks us to recognise that Jesus was not just some guy who lived 2,000 years ago but rather someone who continues to be a presence in our lives today. And he stands before each and every one of us today and asks that same, demanding, confronting, purposeful question: ‘Who do YOU say I am?’

Scriptural Context - A Turning Point

This passage forms a crucial turning point in the Gospel of Mark. It occurs at the very mid-point of the gospel – the end of chapter 8 in a 16 chapter gospel. From this point on the gospel takes a greater focus on what it means to be a disciple and Jesus’ movement towards Jerusalem. This passage in which Peter professes his faith in Jesus as the Messiah is immediately followed by the account of the Transfiguration. From this point onwards, the gospel writer reveals the growing understanding of Jesus’ identity that until now has been wrapped in secrecy.

Gospel Focus– Peter’s Insight

When Peter answers Jesus’ question he demonstrates the disciples’ dawning awareness of Jesus’ true identity. It is the first occasion that

the disciples are called to own what they think about Jesus. However, when Jesus begins to spell out what being the Messiah reality means – persecution and death – Peter tries to convince Jesus that he doesn’t need to go down that path. Jesus turns on Peter and snaps, ‘Get behind me, Satan!’ It is a reminder of the desert temptation Jesus had to face at the start of his ministry when he wrestled with what sort of messiah he was called to be.

Scriptural Context - Sandwich Technique

The Gospel of Mark is famous for a technique of ‘sandwiching’ stories or sections between two related events to bring what is sandwiched into greater focus. This gospel passage falls within a significant sandwich that runs from 8:22 (the healing of a blind man at Bethsaida) to 10:52 (the healing of blind Bartimaeus). The healings of blindness that surround the sandwich reflect the lack of ‘sight’ that the disciples have. The ‘meat’ of the sandwich is all about the disciples not really understanding Jesus’ mission and what it means to truly be a disciple. Read the whole section from 8:22 – 10:52 and see how it works.

Safeguarding Sunday

Our Parish and the Archdiocese of Melbourne are committed to the care, wellbeing and protection of children, young people and people at risk in our community. Mindful of the theme for National Child Protection Week, may we work to create safe spaces where we can have meaningful conversations with children and adults at risk about their safety. You can find out more about the Church’s work in this area at: https://www.catholic.au/s/article/Safeguarding-Sunday-2024

Resurrection Maltese Community

Invites everyone to The Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. Celebrated by Fr Gerard on Sunday 6th October at 10.30am Mass. Mass will begin with the procession of Our Lady and after communion all the children will be invited to process down and place a flower at the statue of Our Lady. After Mass there will be some light lunch for all to share and some traditional dancing.
