Term 4 Week 2 of 11

Friday, 18th October 2024

Message From the Principal

Dear Parents/Carers,

Attached with this newsletter is a letter explaining the 2025 School Fees and Levies structures and payments. You will notice some increases in fees and levies for 2025.

Resurrection Catholic Primary School has provided a great education and a well-presented learning space for a number of years with a very low school fee and levies.  However, to be honest this passion for keeping fees and levies low has placed the school under some financial pressures which if continued will eventually see the school operating in the red and thus affect the schools capacity to continue to provide an excellent service. The school’s bottom line is also affected by rising costs associated with running schools. Things have gone up a lot.

Since my arrival at the school, I’ve been in constant meetings with Melbourne Archdiocese Schools (MACS) finance department about the fees and levies, always trying really hard to keep the school fees as low as possible but at the same time ensuring the school is financed in a way so that it continues to thrive.

We are a non-for-profit organisation, and all monies collected go into providing an excellent education for your children. I have tried my hardest to keep any increases to a minimum and recognise that some people are really feeling the current cost of living crisis. Any families who meet the criteria outlined in the MACS School Fees Concession Program can apply for the additional assistance. We will continue to support any families that are struggling where possible.

One example of this need for a levy increase is that we are providing many subscriptions to online programs, iPads for students in the Junior school and a one-to-one Chromebook program from Year 3 - 6 but do not charge in any way for this. We have continued to provide these services but have not budgeted to provide it. Also, government grants come to us per student, but we only charge a family fee which leads to a shortfall.

Effectively there are three major changes to our fee structure:

  1. The school family fee has gone up from $1,025 to $1,175

  2. Families with two or more children will pay an extra $75 for the school family fee ($1,250)

  3. An ICT levy to cover the areas mentioned above has been introduced and this is $100

And two minor changes to reflect price increases:

  1. The curriculum levy has gone from $420 to $440 per year

  2. The excursion levy has gone from $90 to a $100 per year

Best wishes

2024 Planning & Class Placement

Planning for the 2024 school year has already commenced. Please email the office (office@rskingspark.catholic.edu.au) if your children are intending on leaving Resurrection at the end of year.

We are also inviting you to write about your child’s learning and social needs to assist us in the placement of your child into specific classrooms for the 2025 school year. Please note that we may not be able to provide you with exactly what you want, but we do try to do our best given the many and diverse factors that go into making up a class.

Please email Adrian (principal@rskingspark.catholic.edu.au) with the heading “Confidential – 2025 Class Placement”. All emails must be received by Friday 3rd November 3.30pm.

Wrapper Free Wednesday

Our student leadership group is committed to do something about the amount of rubbish in our school! Just a reminder that each and every Wednesday, we are encouraging students to bring in lunchboxes that do not contain any single use plastic.

Thank you, for your support in assisting your child to have a Wrapper Free Lunch box each Wednesday, this is one small way here at Resurrection that we can make a difference to help our Earth.

Disability Parking

We have noticed that the disability parking bays have been used regularly by drivers picking up students that do not have a disability parking permit. The disability parking bays are specifically for those who have a disability and are the adult picking up a child. Disability parking permits are provided so that a person with the disability can access the disability parking bay. Please reconsider if you really require the use of one of these parking bays.

God Bless,

Learning Diversity

Thank you to the families who have already returned a signed copy of their child’s personalised learning plan. If you haven’t had the chance to do so yet, please return the signed copy to the school as soon as possible.

Thank You

2025 Planning

Planning for the 2025 school year is well under way! Please email the office (office@rskingspark.catholic.edu.au) if your children are intending on leaving Resurrection at the end of year. Our 2025 school calendar will also be published shortly - stay tuned!

Middle Sustainability Expo

Our Year 3 and 4 students are very excited to invite our school community to our Middle School Sustainability Expo, which will be held on Friday 25th October (Week 3).

The students are being very creative and designing their projects to advertise different ideas that we, as a community, can be more sustainable. They are looking forward to sharing their knowledge and ideas with you!

Classes will be able to visit the Expo throughout the day, and we warmly invite all parents and carers, starting at 2:45pm. The Expo will begin at the 3A classroom (next to the car park) and will travel through all Year 3 and 4 classrooms.

On this day, the students will also be visited by members of Brimbank City Council, who will be talking with the students about sustainability ideas and programs in a special workshop.

We are all looking forward to a fantastic day of sharing our learning and ideas with the school community.

SUNDAY GOSPEL

This Sunday’s reading is from the Holy Gospel according to Mark (10:35 - 45)

The Son of Man came to give his life as a ransom for all.

James and John, the sons of Zebedee, approached Jesus. ‘Master,’ they said to him, ‘we want you to do us a favour.’ He said to them, ‘What is it you want me to do for you?’ They said to him, ‘Allow us to sit one at your right hand and the other at your left in your glory.’ ‘You do not know what you are asking’ Jesus said to them. ‘Can you drink the cup that I must drink, or be baptised with the baptism with which I must be baptised?’ They replied, ‘We can.’ Jesus said to them, ‘The cup that I must drink you shall drink, and with the baptism with which I must be baptised you shall be baptised, but as for seats at my right hand or my left, these are not mine to grant; they belong to those to whom they have been allotted.’

When the other ten heard this they began to feel indignant with James and John, so Jesus called them to him and said to them: ‘You know that among the pagans their so-called rulers lord it over them, and their great men make their authority felt. This is not to happen among you. No; anyone who wants to become great among you must be your servant, and anyone who wants to be first among you must be slave to all. For the Son of Man himself did not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.’

Gospel Reflection

James and John are effectively calling ‘shotgun’ on the best seats at the table! When they ask to sit at the left and right hand of Jesus, they are asking Jesus to name them as his deputies. They’re looking to secure for themselves positions of power and authority. The only problem is that they have a completely messed up idea of what it means for Jesus to enter into his glory. For several weeks now, we have been exploring a theme from the Gospel of Mark that follows a physical journey towards Jerusalem as well as a symbolic and theological journey towards what is going to occur in Jerusalem – Jesus’ arrest, crucifixion and resurrection.

Throughout this journey, Jesus has been trying to prepare the disciples for what is to come and educate them about what it really means to be a disciple of his. Three times Jesus tells the disciples explicitly what lies ahead. Each time the disciples fail to grasp what Jesus tells them. Despite occasional glimpses of insight, the disciples still believe that Jesus is going to rise up as a political or military figure. In a complete dismissal of this sort of thinking, Jesus declares quite forcefully that leadership of this sort is not what he intends for himself, nor for those who follow him.

Leadership in the Jesus model is about being of service to others; it is not about prestige and acclamation. Many of the best leaders are those who do not have any title of leadership or authority. Their leadership and authority come from what they do and how they do it. They inspire others to follow their example. They don’t demand it; they don’t bully; they don’t play power games. People simply want to follow their example.

Living the Gospel – Servant Leadership

What does it really mean to practise servant leadership? It means placing the needs of others before your own desires for prestige or authority. We’ve all known people who have been given a position of leadership and they really only wanted the job as recognition of their popularity; a thank you for previous work done; an opportunity to demonstrate their strength of will or cleverness with words. Servant leadership is about collaborating; it’s about empowering people to do their best; it’s about trusting others and about rolling up your sleeves and getting on with the job.

Have you thought? Integrity

Who do you really admire? Who would you really like to be like? Aside from sports stars, models and actors whose skills you might admire or even envy; who is a person who lives their life in a way that you would like to emulate? Perhaps it’s not that you want to do exactly what they have done but rather it’s the way they’ve gone about living their life. I would bet that there is a close match between what they hold to be true and the way they live their life – integrity!

Scriptural context – Mark’s Gospel

Despite appearing second, Mark’s gospel is now recognised as being the first written of those that appear in the Bible. The shortest of the four gospels, it begins with Jesus’ entry into public life and, in its original form, ends with the discovery of the empty tomb. It is sometimes called a gospel ‘in a hurry’ as the movement between events is almost abrupt. The gospel writer identifies almost immediately that Jesus is God’s ‘beloved Son’ and then spends the rest of the gospel describing the gradual revelation of this fact and the disciples’ growing awareness.

 St Vinnies Christmas Appeal

As we begin to approach the end of the year and look forward to Christmas, for members in our community that are less fortunate than us it means a time of greater stress. This year especially has seen an increase in the number of people who have lost jobs, been victims of violence or in financial difficulty. St Vincent De Paul will be helping these families before Christmas and look to our parishioners and their generous support to assist us. For those that can, we ask for the following:

  • Christmas hampers for families (feel free to make your own)

  • Books, puzzles and activities for children

  • Toys for children

All our St Vinnie’s members will represent each of you as we will deliver these generous gifts on your behalf.

We would like to extend our gratitude and thank you for your continuous support.

God Bless you all from
